Evaluation

For this project we were asked to create two models for a futuristic vehicle - they were not allowed to have wheels. We had to research in to various vehicles and techniques to achieve the design. We had to do design development for each design, to show the process and the try out the techniques we have learnt to produce to final out come.

I made a craft/balloon/blimp combination. I wanted to use various aspects of a design to make one complete design - because this way, it would make it more interesting and unique. For the other one, I went for a ship, hang glider design - I did this for a more traditional, versus futuristic design which I had planned out through my research. I wanted to communicate a vechicle which would work - but was something completely new which used a whole range of aspects to create one set model - such as, take different things from different areas.

I experimented with designs by looking in to various animals/insects/sea life and thinking of ways to combine them with a vehicle. I made pages of drawn designs of transistions from one thing, to the other gradually. I also tried designning a whole set of vehicles from my mind in quick sketch's to get out whatever came to mind. Some of the idea's I rejected, specifically from the transistions thing - because simply put, some of the animals didn't work.

What I wanted to communicate with my audience is a ship that works well, and is creative both traditionally and futuristicly. I feel I did achieve this through having parts of the vehicles more ordinary, and others using more techniques.

I feel I could have managed my time better, mainly with the end models so that I would have them finished sooner. And also, get all the paper work out of the way first, rather than working on both at the same time. I feel my strengths in completing this project were my designs and how varied the idea's were and how I tried to experiement in many different areas.

If I had more time, I would of liked to add smaller detail - such as windows and doors to the ship - or headlights and animations to the crafts. I'd also like to work on the texture more to give it a more realistic appearance.

In future, I feel I will work on my time mangement and get everything done in the appropriate timing rather than everything getting messed up. I'd also like to do more tutorials, so I understand the work better and can get on with it more easier.

Experiments (Lightwave Research.)

I researched in to plants because I thought adding them as decoration or towards the shape would make it more interesting. I love the idea of using mushrooms as roofs or the long stems as supports for a vehicle. I also love the colours and tones of these, and how they have these intricate patterns which would feature well on a vehicle and give it a more interesting, dynamic and different appearance.

It'd be nice to experiment with different types of vehicles, all nature inspired. It would allow for works on shapes and structure, rather than using the same ones we have now. It would also let me combine more things together to make an end peice.

The whale reminds me of a big ship, and because one of my design is based around a ship, I thought to research in to larger animals - one of these was the whale. I feel this is big and wide as a ship, with a lot of detail that if added to the vehicle would make it look interesting and unique. I mostly love the bigness of the whale, and how it has this huge body which you could mould and shape in to something else entirely - but still save parts of it to show it resembles a whale.

I also like the idea of a vehicle being underwater, such as a submarine, or something on water - such as a ship.

Another part of a craft I have an idea for is to use the body of a shark. You can see how it has this intricate tail which whips out at the end - and would be an interesting aspect to use for a craft - for instance, this part would be good to use as Jets. The face is very hard and thick, and would make good for a front passage with a huge window or cock pit. The Shark is already shaped roughly like a craft, even it's fins resemble wings, so it would be interesting how I could show this through with the design.

I also like the water colours with the shark. I feel these tones suit a craft well - silvers, greys and blues - because their very stereo-type futuristic.

I find the Octopus really interesting because it has such different aspects too it's body which not many other creatures - most specifically it's tentacles. It has this very interesting, rounded head part which blends in well with these long leg like tentables. It almost looks like some kind of highway or roads.

What drew me too it's design is the idea of using various shapes and structures, which would make for a more interesting design. I also like the colouring, the flat, soft tones which all blend in well together with the rest of the animal.

For my craft, I'm using a similar shape to a fly. I'm taking reference from this because I want it to be small, and round and have the appearance of something small and delicate. A fly also has sections, which could be counted as the jets and the front of the ship - so already theres the basis of a ship. I also like the idea of the wings and how they span out, which could be used in my design - however, I do want the craft to appear more vehicle than insect. Other insects I looked in too were Wasps, Bee's and Butterflies because they all have a similar design.

I really like the idea of combining a bird with a vehicle, because it has so many functions which would benefit transportation - such as flight. I like the idea of combining an animal with a vehicle, so it gets qualities from both. For instance, I could use the wings from the bird for the wings on a craft - so their move bird like. I could take the colour and the texture of the fur. I could make the front of the vehicle, look like the beak and head to create a more interesting and versatile appearance.

For my research, I chose to look in to various vehicles. This would help me come up with a design that was realistic and hold a lot of original, and unique aspects.

A hover ship with a very interesting design. I love the idea of the various shapes and sizes, so it creates something unique. I really like how the front part is long, with all these triangles coming off it to carry on the design and add things further to make it appear more futuristic. The back end also has small decorations which grab your attention and make you realise this isn't something that has been created in this time era. I also really like the colouring, the silver and blue really work well together on these types of vehicles, because they give it a metallic, slick appearance which blends well with the idea of the design.

A futuristic boat. It has the same appearance as a boat, but has wings coming off it which slide against the water and allow it to look different. The overal design of it isn't really that futuristic, but the gliders on the side let it have an aspect which is different, unique and interesting. I really like the idea of the wings, because it improves the boat and allows it to be more stable and run faster - so the artist has thought of functionality here, as well as the design.

With my design, I'd like to have well thought out functionalities which would not only improve the original design, but also would work out too.

I really like the idea of using a hang glider in my design. I feel this is one of the Traditional aspects, as well as the Blimp idea, which would work well with something futuristic. I simply love how simple it is, and how it still works and how much improvements can be made on it to make it fly longer, to make it more functional and easier to use.

I like the idea of using something more traditional which isn't futuristic at all and combining it with something that is - to make something more unique.

I love the idea of this futuristic tractor. The artist has basically taken something quite boring, and made it interesting by altering the colour design, placement and shape. It has the basic structure of a Tractor, but uses more smooth edges and add on's which give it a more futuristic feel. I particulary like how the front is very tractor like, but when it draws towards the top, where the window is - there's more of a craft like appearance too it and I believe this aspect is what gives it a more futuristic feel.
With my design, I'd like to use a more craft like appearance because I feel these shapes alter them in to a more slick, professinal design.

This vehicle has many futuristic aspects - such as the overal build, shape and functionality. It has a very tank design, and uses shapes such as triangles and domes which give it a more original and unique feel too it. The colours, and sleekness of it make it look rather futuristic, and the whole idea of it - from shapes, to the windows in the middle, to the back end.
With my design, I want to experiment in these types of areas. I'd like to use shapes not usually used when making a vechicle and hopefully design something more interesting and unique.

This is a futuristic Blimp - I researched in to blimps because I liked the prospect of using something similar to this - either this or a balloon of some sort. Mainly because I feel the prospect of combining both an air ship, and a craft really interests me. I like this blimp because it does just that, and has both aspects of a ship with the base designned how it is, with the engines on the side and the wings. But then you get this big, beautiful balloon which allows it to have a more traditional feel.
With my design, I'd like to capture both a traditional and futuristic feel too it by using both of these aspects in the design. Using more influences from both original vechicles, and future designs.

A bike which reminds me of a chopper. It had an odd shape, which makes it stand out from most bikes - and gives it that futuristic appearance. For instance, the back end goes up to reveal a jet extruding outwards - I also like the difference in wheels, one being bigger and thicker than the front, it allows it to have more dynamics and varied in design. It holds qualities from a lot of different bikes, from choppers, too BMX types - which is probably what gives it that unique effective.
Withmy design, I will be combining more than one thing together to get a more varied design and something thats unique in it's own way because it holds seperate aspects from two completely different designs.

This aeroplane design is built in a more simple, sleek way. It's smoothed over and has small decoration peices which just seem futuristic to me - such as the front and the design of the wings. I really like this design, mainly because it's taken the plane, and changed it just enough for it to be concidered more unique - without completely losing the plot and changing every aspect so it doesn't even look like the vehicle you had based it on. Even though it does have a completely different front and wings, you can still tell what it is because it holds a lot of originality as well.
With my design, I'd like to make something with smooth edged, with an professional look and something that alters parts, but keeps others the same.

This is designned as a futuristic sports car. It's for a slick, clean appearance which doesn't seem that advanced on the outside to what we have today - but it's the coat of paint and the shape of the vehicle which makes one believe it could be a few generations away. I really like the design of the front of the car, how it molds in to shape and appears as a whole. I also like the windows and how it all blends well with the rest of the car.
With my design, I don't think I'd want to take that much a way from the original design. I want it to look futuristic, but still have similar qualities to what we have now - mainly because I doubt in the future cars will look a lot different anyway. I specifically like the front of the car though, and would like to experiment with something simpler.

This design is more complicated than something standard, because someones thought about how it would operate in different environments. For instance, it's more like a Transformer than a vehicle, and can morph in to a flying transportation device - and something that can go on land. There's a lot of guns and armour, which would suggest it's designned for some kind of war or defence mechanism.
I find the image too complicated, there's too much happening and it's hard to tell what everything is. Even though I do like the design, with mine, I want to make it more simpler with less decoration/ect.

This reminds me of something that would belong in the army. It has a very tank appearance - with the armour surrounding it and the overall shape. I like the idea of this design, mainly for the smaller aspects of it such as the design of the wheels and the head lights - I feel it's these that give it a more original touch. I also like the glossy, black texture too it that make it look "new" - and people symbolize "new" with "futuristic" a lot of the time.

Other than the wheels, there's not much else to suggest it's futuristic - yet the image still gives that feel. With my design, I'd like to have little touches which symbolize the fact that it is futuristic and not from this era.

This car is taking a more unique approach and goes about completely rebranding the car as it is today. In some ways, it goes back in time because it only has two wheels - but then it has this slick, thin body which takes up less space and appears as though it would be able to travel faster. What it reminds me of is a blend of a motor bike - with the shape - and a car - with the roof. So it's combining two vehicles, to make a more individual one with it's own unique style.

I really like the idea of using two seperate things and merging them together to make one peice - which will hold aspects of both, and because of this, become more unique.

This motorbike is based on a more realistic concept for a design. It holds a lot of aspects, for instance the functions and how it looks, but there's something about the appearance - the clean and sharpness of it all - that make it look realistic. What I mainly like about it is the shape, and how it has this "speed" feel too it, because it's small, thin and holds a "light" appearance. I also love the colouring, such as the blacks against the greys/silvers - these give it a more professional finish and also help with the futuristic aspect.
With my design, I'd like to use similar colours - rather than using bright colours, or just one tone - I'd like to use a whole range of tone because I believe these work better on vehicles - specifically futuristic ones because it gives it that "new" feel.

Lightwave process 2

This model was created by getting influence from a fly for the craft - and the prospect of having a futuristic craft and hot air balloon as one unique design.

To begin the process, I first click "N" on the keyboard, which brings up a box - I put certain co-ordinates in to the box to fit the kind of idea I was going for with my design - making sure I hit the enter key for everything to register. Then I pressed the space bar to deselect the options in the box.

Then I clicked the tab key to turn on a mode called Sub Patch. This will make everything appear smoother and organic when creating things.

To begin the actual molding of the space ship, I selected the two back polygons of the ship - I then clicked on the "Move Tool" and pulled back the polygons so that they extruded outwards. Then I deselected all the polygons except the middle one, and clicked on "Smooth Shift" tool in the Multiply menu. This gives a smoothed out dent between the two ridges so it gives the appearance of jets. Then, to give the jets a hole for the flames, click on the polygons again and select the "bevel tool" - this will make a dent to finalize the jet like feel.
To create the wings, select the polygons on either side of the ship - then press "smooth shift," and use the "move/rotate" tools to extend the sides. Lean them out at an angle so that they're not just out straight, and appear more like wings. Once satisfied, use the "smooth shift" tool and drag out the wings.

For the front part of the craft, I extruded it slightly - and then simply pressed "smooth shift" to add the odd angle front part.

To create the Alien balloon shape - I firstly used the circular tool to create the globe, I made this fairly big in comparison to the craft. I then selected polygons on the sides and extruded them at odd angles so they appeared like tentacles - I finished them off by connecting them to the ship.
For the windows, I made the indents by pressing the "bevel tool." Once this was complete, I set about texturing it all.

To finalize the design, I textured it by naming each individual part and taking a texture I had saved in the image folder. I used a red-orange for the balloon part, and blue for the craft. I wanted the two vehicles to clash, almost like they shouldn't be together - one being more Alien and Sci Fi, and the other being futuristic - I believe I achieved this seperation further with the choices of colour.

I then added a background - I made it simple, with just a sea and sky scene. From here, I rendered it and made it in to a short video clip of a full circular motion around the vehicle.

Lightwave process 1

To begin my Lightwave project, we were asked to design and create two models for a futuristic vehicle. We could use any techniques, with any functions - as long as it didn't involve wheels. To begin the project, I first research in to different transportation methods, so that I could get an idea of the kind of thing I'd want to do for my final peice. Once this was done, I started sketching out idea's - using techniques such as combining animal traits, to come up with something unique and original.

Eventually, I settled on a design which was based partly on a boat and a hang glider - and a small craft influenced by the design of a Fly.

For my first design, I decided to go with the part boat, part hang glider. I began by making the base of the boat, since this would be the main structure of the design. I did this by first creating a box, and molding it in to the shape I wanted to achieve - I did this by selecting the ends of the ship, clicking the right polygons and moving each sides to make the curves. To create the move defined curves - specifically the bottom aspects - I selected the points on the polygons, then clicked on them seperately, to move them individually to mold them in to shape. I also used "smooth shift," and "move," to add more decoration and depth to the sides of the ship.

To create the ropes to connect the hang glider and the ship, I firstly created a disk - streached to a cylinder so it was similar to a long tree trunk. I then duplicated this, so I had two of the same thing on the same layer. Then I created a circle, used the slice tool to create the rings and smoothed them out so they were more circular. Taking the cylinder again, I duplicated it to add it too the bottom. Once that was complete, I added small decoration by creating a circle, squashing it together with the sizing tool, and placing them on the sides - from here, I altered the sides until everything fit together and looked correct.

Placing the suspender to the ship, I duplicated as shown in the above image - so that I now had two. I then placed them on either side of the ship and rotated them until they connected at the top ends.

For the glider, I got a cone shape and selected specific polygons - these were the bottom parts of the structure - then I deleted them so now it had a flat surface at one end and a pointed part at the other. I then selected certain polygons on the roof and using the extrude tool, pulled them out slightly so the top had dents and ridges in it to give it more depth.

I then rotated the glider and placed it on top of the ship so it connected with the two ropes I had created earlier.

After I had the correct shape, and placement - I set about duplicating it, sizing it smaller, and placing it on top of the original. I did this three times, still making each one smaller than the next to create winged effect. Once I was satisfied of the placement and sizing, I made the whole thing bigger than the ship by streaching it.

Once the ship was complete, I added textures by saving some to my "images" folder. I then named each individual peice of the ship, so I would be able to texture them seperately. I then added them to the ship - using a wooden texture for the bottom - a red material for the glider and a metal for the attachments holding it all together.
Once this was done, I rendered it and create a small video peice to go with it.
